The Zonta Club of Berry says
"NO"
to Violence Against Women
The Zonta Club of Berry is launching its annual "16 Days of Activism", part of Zonta International’s campaign taking a stand against the devastating pandemic of violence against women.
International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women
This day is remembered for the brutal assassination of the Mirabel sisters (Patria, Minerva and Maria Teresa) on the orders of Dominican dictator Trujillo in 1960.
Standing strong, the sisters faced harassment, imprisonment and threats to their lives for fighting for women’s rights. The sisters, also known as "the Butterflies", have become international symbols of resistance and feminism.
Human Rights Day
This day aims to raise awareness of women’s rights violations and highlight the alarming statistics of domestic violence within the Shoalhaven region and across Australia.
In the year leading up to June 2023, domestic violence-related homicides in the
Shoalhaven area reached nearly twice the New South Wales average. These tragic figures reflect an ongoing crisis that has deeply impacted local communities and countless lives.
Across Australia, a woman loses her life to domestic violence every six days, a statistic that the Zonta Club of Berry campaign underscores with a powerful visual display in Jelly Bean Park, Egans Lane, Nowra, New South Wales.
Trees will be adorned with orange ribbons and symbolic orange shoes, each pair representing a life lost to domestic violence. The color orange, internationally recognized in campaigns to end violence against women, stands as a beacon of hope and resilience for those affected, as well as a call to action for community members to stand together in opposition to violence.
The Zonta Club of Berry encourages everyone in the community to visit Jelly Bean Park during this period to reflect on the impact of domestic violence and to join the movement to end it. Each ribbon, each shoe, is a reminder of those lives lost and of our collective responsibility to create a safer world for women and girls.

Where to get help
The Shoalhaven Domestic and Family Violence Committee has developed a Domestic Violence Support Directory which identifies services in the Shoalhaven. The directory outlines what the service offers, who the service can assist, and how to access the service.
The programs and organisations named in the directory include services relating to domestic violence, legal help, accommodation service, tenancy and many more.
